I had never heard of SCUDD (standing conference of university drama departments) before I was asked to speak at their conference in Wolverhampton University’s glistening new Drama Department building (Walsall Campus).
They seem like a very decent bunch and presenting to them is certainly an invitation not to be turned down.
I struggled quite badly, I’d prepared too much material and couldn’t quite work out who my audience was or what they needed to hear. As soon as I sat down I wished there were a chance to try it again. Fortunately it was a generous audience and it felt worthwhile when I realised that even people who are fairly familiar with Stan’s Cafe are unaware of the breadth of our work. None of these speaking engagements are ever wasted, even if it only means the cloakroom attendant at the V&A recognises you.
